What you need
- 91–99% isopropyl alcohol, or a glass cleaner like Formula 420
- Coarse salt
- Plugs, caps or paper towels to seal the openings
- Pipe cleaners or a brush for tight spots
- Rubber gloves (optional)
Step by step
- Take it apart. Remove the bowl and downstem (and the glycerin coil if you have one) and dump the old water.
- Rinse with hot water to loosen surface gunk. Skip this step for glycerin chambers.
- Add salt and alcohol: a tablespoon of salt and enough alcohol to slosh around.
- Plug and shake hard for 1–2 minutes. The salt scrubs and the alcohol dissolves resin.
- Soak small parts (bowl and downstem) in a bag of alcohol and salt for 10–15 minutes.
- Rinse thoroughly with warm water until the alcohol smell is gone.
- Dry completely before using again.
