How much water?
Fill just enough to cover the slits or holes on your downstem or percolator by about half an inch. Too little skips filtration. Too much makes pulls hard and splashes up.
How often to change it
After every session is ideal and daily is the minimum. Stale water is the number one cause of bad-tasting hits.
Tricks for fresher water
- Start with clean, cool water.
- Add an ash catcher. It catches debris before it reaches your main water. See ash catchers.
- Use a honeycomb bowl to keep ash out of the downstem. See Freeze Pipe bowls.
- Don't use ice in glycerin bongs. The frozen coil does the cooling.
