The idea is simple: pull smoke through water so it arrives cooler and smoother. People have been building on that idea for at least 700 years. Here's the short version.
Where the word comes from
"Bong" most likely comes from the Thai word baung, a cylindrical bamboo tube. Bamboo water pipes were used across Southeast Asia, and American soldiers and travelers brought the word home in the 1960s and '70s.
Clay water pipes in medieval Ethiopia
Some of the oldest hard evidence comes from Ethiopia. Excavations at a cave near Lalibela turned up ceramic water-pipe bowls with cannabis residue, radiocarbon-dated to around the 14th century. Water pipes made from gourds and animal horns were used widely in Africa.
The Scythian "gold bongs"
In 2013, archaeologists in southern Russia opened a Scythian burial mound and found ornate gold vessels about 2,400 years old. Inside was residue of cannabis and opium. Headlines called them "gold bongs." Experts still debate exactly how they were used, but they show these people took their smoke ceremonies seriously.
Hookahs and the Silk Road
By the 1500s, the hookah, a water pipe usually used for tobacco, was spreading across Persia, India and the Ottoman world. It made smoking through water a social ritual.
The American glass revolution
In the 1960s and '70s, head shops brought water pipes to the counterculture. Glassblower Bob Snodgrass popularized fumed glass that changes color as you use it, and in the '90s and 2000s borosilicate "scientific glass" with percolators raised the bar. In 2003, the federal "Operation Pipe Dreams" crackdown on paraphernalia sellers sent Tommy Chong to prison for nine months, but the industry kept growing.
The latest chapter: freezing the smoke
Water cools smoke a little. Modern freezable pieces go further: a sealed glycerin chamber goes in the freezer, and the smoke travels through a frozen coil on its way to you. That's the idea behind Freeze Pipe, mrb0ng's Bong of 2027.
